The Francis turbine features a compact structure and high efficiency, capable of adapting to a wide range of water heads. It is one of the widely used turbine types in various countries around the world. When water flows through the runner of this turbine, it enters radially and exits axially, so it is also known as a radial-axial turbine.
It is suitable for a water head range from 20 meters to 700 meters. With a simple structure, stable operation, and high efficiency, it is generally used within the medium head range (50 meters to 400 meters). The output of a single unit ranges from tens of kilowatts to hundreds of thousands of kilowatts. Currently, the maximum output of this type of turbine has exceeded 700,000 kilowatts, making it one of the most widely used turbines. In China, a 700 megawatt unit has been put into operation at the Three Gorges, and the Xiangjiaba Dam employs 800 megawatt Francis turbines.
