Audited Supplier The Kaplan turbine is a response type that may be utilized with large discharges as well as being appropriate for low-pressure hydropower projects. Like the Francis runner, the Kaplan runner has to be immersed in water to function properly. Flow fills the runner by controlled guide vanes that are radially positioned around the turbine intake and strike runner blades with a certain angle of attack. The guide vanes coupled with the runner blades are changeable and may be adjusted by a regulator to obtain the best possible performance at various flow rates. Static blades are adequate at a steady flow rate. In the event of a malfunction, guiding vanes may also be closed to safeguard the runner. When water strikes the blades, it transfers energy to them and flows out via the draught tube. The velocity does not fluctuate from the intake to the exit if the cross section of the draught tube is considered to remain the same. The efficiency is unaffected by static pressure fluctuations at the suction head; therefore, the runner may be positioned elsewhere in the draught tube. The guiding vanes must be set directly in front of the runner when the runner is inserted within the tube to produce a correct twist. However, owing to a high head, the danger of cavitation rises if the draught tube is rather long
the Kaplan turbine working principle revolves around its being a type of axial flow reaction turbine with a pressure head range of 0-60m. Unlike the impulse-based Pelton turbine, which operates optimally within a pressure head range of 300m-1600m, or the mixed-flow Francis turbine, best suited for a pressure head range of 60m-300m, the Kaplan turbine operates primarily through a reaction mechanism. Water flows parallel to the axis of rotation, and as it passes through the turbine, it imparts its energy, causing the blades to rotate. What sets the Kaplan apart is its adjustable blades, which can be pitched to optimize performance across a wide range of flow conditions. This adaptability ensures that the turbine operates at peak efficiency, even when water flow rates vary.
