Buckets
The buckets, or impulse blades , are cast into two cup shapes adjacent to each other. These buckets 'catch' the water jet and direct the flow gradually backwards. Due to the bucket design, almost all of the kinetic energy from the water is harnessed as torque prior to discharge.
Wheel
The Pelton wheel is very heavy and acts as a flywheel. A flywheel stores rotational energy and resists changes to rotational speed. The amount of energy stored in the flywheel is the square root of its rotational speed.
Drive Shaft
The drive shaft connects the turbine runner to the generator, this makes it possible to convert the mechanical energy from the rotating runner into electrical energy. Pelton turbines can be used as prime movers for other rotating assets also e.g. a mechanical pump.
Spear/Needle
The spear/needle controls the flow of water through the nozzle and thus the amount of force exerted upon the wheel. Not all Pelton wheels have a spear or needle.
Spear Adjuster
The spear adjuster can be operated manually, electrically, or hydraulically. Large Pelton turbines actuate the spear adjuster hydraulically only.
The Pelton turbine is a type of free-jet resp. impulse turbine which convert the pressure energy of water into kinetic energy entirely in the distributor. Pelton turbines are used at large heads and relatively low flow rates. The turbine power is adjusted by means of the nozzle cross-section. In practice, Pelton turbines are used for driving synchronous generators, where they run at constant speed.
The experimental unit consists of the Pelton wheel, a needle nozzle used as distributor, an adjustable band brake for loading the turbine and a housing with a transparent front panel. The transparent cover enables you to observe the water flow, the Pelton wheel and the nozzle during operation. You can change the nozzle cross-section and thus the flow rate by adjusting the nozzle needle.
The pressure at the turbine inlet is recorded with a pressure sensor. A force sensor and a speed sensor are attached to the band brake. Thus, the mechanical power output of the turbine can be determined. Speed, torque and pressure are displayed on the switch cabinet and processed further in the software.
Francis turbines may be designed for a wide range of heads and flows. This, along with their high efficiency, has made them the most widely used turbine in the world. In contrast to the Pelton turbine, the Francis turbine operates at its best completely filled with water at all times. The turbine and the outlet channel may be placed lower than the lake or sea level outside, reducing the tendency for cavitation.
